Plenty of new houses in the pipeline, despite dip in sales...

New home sales have fallen from their HomeBuilder peak but remain strong by historical standards, according to new data from the Housing Industry Association.

The New Home Sales Report, which is a monthly survey of the largest-volume home builders in the five largest states, found sales in the August quarter were:

    * 15.5% lower than the August 2020 quarter
    * 15.4% higher than the August 2019 quarter
    * 4.5% higher than the August 2018 quarter

The HomeBuilder grant, which ran from June 2020 to March 2021, triggered a surge in new home sales during that period.

Sales numbers have fallen since, but remain strong, in part due the increase in household savings that has occurred during the pandemic, according to HIA economist Tom Devitt.

“There has also been a switch in market preference toward lower-density homes as working from home becomes entrenched," he said.
